The Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR) Office of Kotabaru, South Kalimantan, is dredging two kilometers drainages from the Simpang Tiga Irama area to the side of Miftahul Jannah Mosque to deal with flooding.

"Dredging is being carried out to maximize its function as a water channel to reduce flooding during heavy rains," said Head of PUPR Suprapti Tri Astuti in Kotabaru, Thursday.

Tuti, her nickname, expounded that this area is often flooded when rainy season comes, due to failure of water channel to function due to being covered with garbage and hard mud along the area which is popularly known as Pal Satu.

The abundant of water if it is not drained properly will stagnate higher and higher and inundate the houses surrounding. Here the role of drainage is crucial.

"It's not just garbage and mud (which is dredged up) but household waste is also contributor to block drainage," she said.

Drainage in Pal Satu area had never been dredged before, due to the density of the urban residential areas. Dredging is carried out using spot system to reduce the impact of dredging.

She also explained dredging by making holes over the sidewalks to remove silt, sand, and rocks, to be then put into pick-up truck to be disposed of at specified place.

Head of PUPR expounded that water channel system has an important role to avoid puddle or standing water in settlements. It is one of the elements of public infrastructure needed by urban residents in order to have a safe, clean, healthy and comfortable life. Its presence is important for an area, especially urban residential areas.
