The city government of Banjarmasin has released as many as 10,000 fish seeds to the river to mark the 27th National Fish Day.
Head of Banjarmasin Food Security, Agriculture, and Fisheries Agency M Makhmud here on Thursday said that the National Fish Day was commemorated by carrying out restocking of pangasius fish seed.
"We release it into Jelai River in South Banjarmasin," he said.
Restocking is a re-spreading type of fish that historically inhabit the water, which for some reason have decreased or no longer found, one of which is pangasius fish in the waters of Banjarmasin.
"This is to promote the conservation of river fish here," said M Makhmud.
Jelai River, which divides two urban villages, Mantuil and Basirih Selatan in South Banjarmasin, began to lack of fish population.
By restocking, it is hoped that pangasius fish develop, and fishermen can take the benefit.
This was also desired by the Mayor of Banjarmasin H Ibnu Sina and his deputy H Arifin Noor who participated in sowing the fish seeds into Jelai River, which is a tributary of Martapura River.
"The mayor wants the farmers and fishermen to be prosperous," he said.
Therefore, Makhmud said, the mayor strongly supports the conservation and development of river fish.
"It has been several times we have carried out sowing of fish seeds into the river this year," he said.
