Marabahan, South Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - The population of bekantan (proboscis monkey) in the conservation area of Bakut Island, Barito Kuala, now growing with the birth of three babies.
Head of Biodiversitas Indonesian from the University of Lambung Mangkurat Amalia Rezeki, S.Pd, M.Pd, through a press release to AntaranewsKalsel on Saturday said, at the beginning of June 2015, based on observations of biodiversitas research team three babies born on Bakut Island, a conservation area located in Barito Kuala District, South Kalimantan.
According to Amalia, bekantan population on Bakut Island showed improvement trends and encouraging development. This increase was seen from the growing number of individuals, from the range of 30 in 2012 and then increased to about 42 in 2015.
The figure includes proboscis wild released by Sahabat Bekantan Indonesia (SBI) together with BKSDA South Kalimantan also three pregnant parents.
"This is an exciting surprise for all of us, because of proboscis monkeys that had been categorized as endangered, showing its development by giving birth to babies who are funny," said Amalia Rezeki, proboscis monkey conservation practitioners who is also a lecturer at the Biology Education of Lambung Mangkurat University (Unlam).
She said Amalia, in terms of reproduction, each birth required a period of approximately one year and the number is only one tail. This low breeding adding with hunting by humans make this proboscis monkey population continues to decline, plus the worsening land use by humans who tend to ignore the environmental impact analysis.
