Sub-directorate IV of Certain Crimes (Tipidter) of the South Kalimantan Provincial Police's Directorate of Special Crime Investigation has uncovered the trade in protected parrots and apprehended one of the perpetrators.

"We have confiscated 11 parrots during the arrest on Tuesday (Nov 3, 2020) in Sungai Bangkal Village, Sei Tabuk Sub-district, Banjar Regency," said Deputy Director of Special Crime Investigation Adj sr Comr (AKBP) Budi Hermanto in Banjarmasin, Tuesday.

Based on the confession of the perpetrator to the police, the birds were his own for resale. He got the protected animals from someone in Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan.

"He bought a total of 20 and sold 9 of them," said Buher, Budi Hermanto's nickname.

Currently, the police are chasing the syndicate of protected animal trading to find out their supplier.

Buher explained, anyone who captures, injures, kills, keeps, possesses, maintains, transports, and trade protected animals while alive is charged under Article 40 paragraph (2) Jo Article 21 paragraph (2) letter (a) of Law No 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Living Natural Resources and their Ecosystems.

Buher also reminded the public not to careless maintain, let alone trade protected animals, that they will be caught in criminal law.

"We always coordinate with the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) to continue to educate the public to comply with the law related to the maintenance of protected animal," he said representing the Director of Special Crime Investigation Sr Comr (Kombespol) Masrur.
