Martapura, South Kalimantan (Antaranews) - Head of Banjar Housing and Settlement Agency Boyke W Triestiyanto said, the use of methane gas from garbage treatment in final processing (TPA) reduces the greenhouse effect.

"If it is not used, then the methane gas that comes out of the landfill waste (TPA) could add to the greenhouse effect that can destroy nature and the environment," he said in Martapura on Sunday.

He said the methane gas from landfill waste used as renewable energy both as a fuel and electrical energy source, so it can be enjoyed by the surrounding community.

Banjar District has already developed residential area not far from the landfill in the village of Padang Panjang, Subdistrict of Karang Intan, as "Kampung Metan" or hamlet of methane. The name taken because its community members using methane gas as a fuel source for daily cooking needs, he said.

A total of 50 families (KK) are given free methane gas that flowed through the pipeline from the landfill to the homes of residents within 1.4 kilometers.

"With methane gas people can save money that they usually expend to buy LPG every month amounting to Rp50 thousand. Now, with the free methane gas they do not have to buy LPG again," he said.

The agency had asked the help of the Ministry of Research and Technology to conduct research that methane gas generated by the landfill waste processing can be more effective and efficient.

Previously, Research and Technology Minister Gusti M Hatta appreciate Banjar District success using landfill waste to produce methane gas, so it can be used as fuel. *** 4 ***
