Kotabaru, South Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of Kotabaru DPRD M Arif uses his house yard to culture crabs with the aim of giving example to local fishermen so as not to always depend on catching fish in the sea.
"We're trying to provide education to fishermen to innovate by cultivating indoor crab or better known as vertical crabhouse," said Arif in Kotabaru, Saturday.
He said this new innovation in crab enlargement has quite promosing results and profit even on limited space.
Vertical crabhouse, he said, is a new breakthrough and an innovation that is worthy of being implemented in Kotabaru.
This system of crab enlargement is by storing them in boxes flowing with brakish water with a very low risk of death, because there are no weeds or intruder in the boxes.
Enlargement with this process does not take long, only approximately two weeks to a maximum of one month, even for large crabs.

"We keeps crabs that measure around 3 ounces in boxes for about 2-3 weeks before they can be harvested and ready to be sold," he said.
Regarding food, he said, it is enough by providing small fish bought from fishermen, until the crabs which we kept for less than a month in the box are ready to be marketed.
"The selling value per head is up to IDR100,000," he said.
He said that he sold his cultivation products to Banjarmasin, Batam and even Jakarta.
According to him, this crab enlargement and fattening method is more effective than traditional method.
Arif hopes that this breakthrough can be applied and developed by fishermen in Kotabaru to boost their income and increase the standard living of the Kotabaru fishing community.
