Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Industry Ministry has pushed manufacturing firms to streamline their waste processing system in a bid to enhance industrial competitiveness in the global market.
"As we know, in addition to the positive impact on the national economy and workers’ absorption, industrial activities also have environmental consequences," Secretary General of the Industry Ministry Achmad Sigit Dwiwahjono stated during a visit to the Industrial Pollution Prevention Agency in Semarang, Central Java.
"To this end, industrial waste processing is deemed necessary in accordance with the characteristic of the waste," Dwiwahjono noted in a statement here on Saturday.
The ministry has extended unwavering support to companies to maintain the quality of waste in accordance with the environmental quality standard, so it can preserve the environment supporting capacity.
All companies have a social responsibility to preserve and manage the environment, especially with regard to industrial waste, as mandated in the government regulations, he stated.
"Hence, understanding and application of effective technology in waste processing are deemed crucial for the industry to obtain an effective and efficient result," he emphasized.
The ministry has committed to green industry development and made it a role model for industrial activities in future.
"Green industry is an icon of an industry that must be implemented, wherein the industry, in its production process, ensures sustainable utilization of natural resources," Dwiwahjono stated.
The ministry has also encouraged the industry to implement a circular economy, including implementing the 5Rs of waste management: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, and Repair.
"In addition, the circular economy approach will reduce the amount of waste since the resulting waste will be recycled as much as possible and offer added value to it," he remarked.
