Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - A Banjarmasin City legislator Matnor Ali believes the city is better off using "pelican crossing" than building a pedestrian bridge (JPO) for pedestrian facilities to cross the road.

Pelican crossing, he said, has been used by big cities to reduce the cost of building JPOs, for example in the capital city of Jakarta, one of which is at the HI roundabout on Jalan Thamrin.

The system has a warning light, like a red light at a crossroad. Then there is a warning sound, that pedestrians have to wait for green signs to cross. Similarly, motorists and cars must stop when the signs show red.

"This kind of system can be used rather than expensive to build a JPO, the worry is that it is not used optimally," said Chairman of Commission III here on Sunday.

This is because, continued the Golkar politician, Banjarmasin already has an example of a JPO on Jalan Pangeran Antasari in front of the Mitra Plaza shopping center, which eventually is not fully utilized.

"Even now it's just the top frame left, so it becomes an unfavorable sight in the middle of the city," he said.

According to him, the construction of a JPO is supposed to be possible if it is really needed, where almost always the people are crossing the road.

The development of JPO requires a very large budget, while the city budget is not so large, Rp1.5 trillion, so planning its use must be really mature, which is really needed by many people.
