The city government of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, is intensifying river maintenance and normalization program to curb floodings.

Mayor H Muhammad Yamin HR here on Monday emphasized his commitment to seriously handling rivers experiencing sedimentation and narrowing in some areas.

Yamin went on the ground to oversee program implementation, including normalization activities on the Miai and Awang River in Jalan Sultan Adam, North Banjarmasin.

Previously, Yamin also inspected normalization of Zafri Zam Zam River of Pulau Insan, Guring River, Gatot Subroto River, HKSN River and Saka Pangilun River.

"Maintenance and normalization of rivers must continue to be intensified. Banjarmasin is the City of a Thousand Rivers, so river must not allowed to be blocked, shallow, or damage," said the Mayor.

He encouraged the community to actively report any canals, tributaries or waterways have not been handled, so that the government can quickly process them.

In its implementation, the city government relies on the internal strength of more than 7,000 civil servants (ASN), as well as community participation. 

Yamin said limited time, resources and the vast area are challanges that have not been fully addressed. Thus, cross-sector collaboration is needed to accelerate results.

As a concrete solution, the ciy government will launch a massive action of clean-up and dredging sediment in Jalan A Yani area, scheduled for February 14, 2026, from morning until 10.00 a.m. WITA.

The action will involve all SKPDs, sub-districts, urban villages, and TNI–Polri, divide into work zones with a target removing hundreds of sacks of sediment in each area. 

This collaboration opens up significant opportunities for real change while reducing the risk of city flooding.

"This campaign is not just about dredging mud, but effort to raise collective awareness that rivers are our collectiove responsibility," said the Mayor.
