Banjarmasin (ANTARA) - Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), a university accredited with Excellent (Unggul), sent its 18 students to participate in international student mobility or community service (KKN) in Japan.

"ULM students will participate in a series of KKN coordinated by Kitakyushu University, Japan," said ULM Deputy Rector for Cooperation, PR and Information Systems Dr Yusuf Azis here on Monday.

The program is a follow-up to international cooperation between ULM and Kitakyushu University, previously signed by ULM Rector Professor Ahmad Alim Bachri and Kitakyushu University representative.

Then, a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) was signed between relevant faculties and laboratories to strengthen academic collaboration between ULM and Kitakyushu University, a leading university in Kyushu with strong focus on environmental and sustainability studies.

Kitakyushu is known as the city with zero waste management, thus it is hoped to be an example and open up opportunity for further collaboration on sustainable environmental management.

“This is our effort to find example and future collaboration for zero waste management within ULM,” she said.

The participant selection process was held in late 2025 through English course program. They then participated in registration process in February 2026 and a selection interview in March 2026.

In addition to broadening international insight, this program is expected to serve as cultural exchange and motivate ULM students to be more confident in pursuing international scholarship, especially in Japan.

“The Japanese community service is our effort to ensure that ULM has an impact not only regionally, but aso internationally,” she added.
