Kotabaru, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Hundreds of inmates at the Kotabaru Correctional Institution forced to sleep with a swinging manner by using a sarong or tapih.

Head of the Penitentiary (Prison) Class II B Kotabaru Bambang Triharjono here Friday said there is no more space to accommodate them, because all the rooms are full with inmates.

"Kotabaru  Prison which should be filled with only 180 inmates is now overfilled with 1,087 prisoners," he said.

The inmates, said Bambang, placed in 11 blocks, and the blocks are previously rooms for officers, hall for meetings and spaces not intended for inmates.

Each room is a small forced to be filled up to tens, even hundreds of prisoners.

The most difficult conditions occur when night time rest or sleep. The room filled up with hundreds of people is not enough if the inmates sleep on the floor simultaneously. Most are forced to make swing or dangling from sarong and tied with a rope to the iron window bars in four corners of the room.

The walls full of nails attached for a hook for changing clothes, jerry cans, or scoop for soap and others.

The air in the room was stifling, because air circulation is less well blocked by cloth for bed hanging with no shirt while still wearing pants because of the heat.

Kotabaru prison head said he could not do much with these conditions, in addition to still ask the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) should immediately build new prisons or rehabilitate existing prisons.

He said, inmates in prisons Kotabaru comes from two districts, namely Kotabaru and Tanah Bumbu regency. Prisoners of Tanah Bumbu and Kotabaru mostly or about 70 per cent were from drug cases.

Kotabaru Vice Regent Burhanuddin after visiting prisons blocks admitted concern of the condition that it is not proper.

According to him, there should be a breakthrough as soon as possible that can be done by the central government through Kemenkumhan and local government.
