Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Rector of the University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) Banjarmasin Sutarto Hadi said that ULM is poised to be a leading university with excellent environmental management of wetlands to be a reference throughout Asia Pacific.


Sutarto talking on his speech to the 58th Anniversary of the ULM which was attended by ULM academicians, South Kalimantan government officials, the Mayor of Banjarmasin Ibnu Sina, Director of Compliance and Risk Company BNI Imam Budi Sarjito, and several other invitations on Wednesday.

According to Sutarto, realizing the flagship program of wetland environmental management, ULM has gradually put together a program of short-term, medium and long term.

In 2009 and 2015, he said, the flagship program was in the preparation phase, the stabilization phase in 2015-2019, 2019 and 2023 is phase of resurrection, and the last is phase of takeoff.

"In the phase of takeoff, ULM will be references for the development and management of wetland environment. Not only for national universities, but also in Asia Pacific," he said.

So, he added, all sectors related to the management of wetlands will be researched, studied and developed by ULM with existing human resources.

"We will examine in terms of agriculture, health, land, fisheries, agriculture, welfare, and the whole potential of the economy related to wetlands to be studied and developed," he said.

About the availability of human resources, added Sutarto, ULM has a very adequate human resources. It has 1,030 lecturers, 810 of which have been certified. That is, 79 percent of ULM's lecturers own qualifications and competence as an educator.

In addition, ULM currently has 35 professors with various areas of expertise, and 250 doctors who are encouraged to conduct research with potential patents.

"The research funds were budgeted substantially in the past two years, waiting for the spirit of the entire faculty is there to carry out these activities," he said.

In 2014, through excellent research Skim ULM Rp5,26 billion was paid to 53 research titles, then paid Rp9.9 billion in 2015, and during the four years to 2018 has provided funding of more than Rp20 billion.

"Now is the right time to encourage ULM lecturers contribute significantly to the increase in the number of patent publications and IPR (HKI)," he said.

According to him, the current is very less number of lecturers who reached a career in the field of functional or researchers, but many are pursuing structural career. Though true, the peak of a career as a professor is the head of the research center.
