The Banjarmasin Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) recorded 28 accidents when heavy rain accompanied by strong wind and lightning hit the city, Monday afternoon (Oct 16. 2023). 


Dozens of trees collapsed, houses' roofs flew off, and buildings also collapsed swept by the hard wind that accompanied the rain from about 16.30 to 17.20 Wita (Central Indonesia Time Zone).

Head of Banjarmasin BPBD Husni Thamrin said a joint team of Fire anf Rescue Agency, volunteers, and PT PLN worked together to handle fallen trees.

BPBD recorded around 13 trees fallen spread across several areas, including Kayu Bulan Housing Complex, Sungai Andai, North Banjarmasin, hit a power cable causing lights went out.

The fallen tree also blocked the road Jalan Piere Tendean in front of Siring Attraction, the embankment of Martapura River, and also fell on power cable.

Trees also fell on Jalan Yos Sudarso, West Banjarmasin, City Forest of Sabilal Muhtadi, Central Banjarmasin, Sungai Miai, and fell onto a house in front of University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) Banjarmasin.

The agency also recorded damages to the roofs of residents' houses in Batu Banawa area, Purnama Permai Complex in Sungai Andai, roof of ACP, ULM Banjarmasin, roofs of Indomaret Benua Anyar, and house's roof in Jalan Sungai Miai.

Billboards were also damaged in Kampung Melayu near te mosque and in front of Hasan Majedi Mosque in Kayu Tangi.

"So far there is no report of casualties due to heavy rain and strong wind," he said.

Thamrin also said that the handling of incident was carried out maximally, especially the fallen tress blocking the roads.

"So that traffic flow run smoothly again," he explained.

Meanwhile, PT PLN's Customer Unit Service (ULP) were repairing 65 power disruption due to fallen trees in a number of places in the city.

“Our officers are now repairing power line in areas experiencing disruption due to fallen trees,” said Manager of PLN ULP Lambung Mangkurat Banjarmasin Adriansyah Eko Saputro here Monday night.

“We are now working to get several areas to light, and hopefully by tomorrow morning all will be back to normal,” he said.
