Acting Regent of South Hulu Sungai (HSS) District H Hermasyah said that the district is targeted to plant 13,618 hectare rice in the national movement (gernas) to anticipate the impact of El Nino.
Until August this year, HSS had planted 30,679 hectares rice with a harvest covering 16,011 hectares.
"Our harvest achievement was 53,909 tons or equivalent of 31,734 tons of rice," he said in a statement here, Saturday.
HSS has a population of 233,153 people with a consumption of rice 24,108 tons per year. Thus, the district still has a rice surplus of 7,626 tons.
"Regarding gernas to anticipate El Nino in HSS with a target of 13,609 hectares, planting has started from July until September 2023, Insya Allah (God Willing) the target will be achieved," he pointed out.
Rice planted on area of 13,619 hectares will start harvesting from October to November 2023 with an estimated production of 61,600 tons or equivalent of 40,459 tons rice. This means HSS will again have a rice surplus of 48,085 tons this year.

Head of HSS Agriculture Office Muhammad Noor added that currently in the district price of premium local rice such as Siam Mayang is around IDR16,000 - 17,000 per kg, Siam Madu IDR14,000 - 15,500 per kg.
"Meanwhile, medium rice in market in our region in HSS, such as Infari, Ciherang, Mekongga is around IDR12,500 - 13,000 per kg," he said.
