The City Government of Banjarmasin has just received an award from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) as one of the best cities in Indonesia in applying “Merdeka Belajar” (Freedom to Learn) program.

“We have just received a notification from Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology that Banjarmasin receives the Merdeka Belajar award through Guru Penggerak (transformational teachers) program,” said Mayor Ibnu Sina after attending the Banjarmasin Youth Ambassador Contest here, Saturday night.

He said there were a total of 540 districts and cities throughout Indonesia that participated in the Merdeka Belajar program.

“All of this is inseparable from Banjarmasin program to keep on improving the quality of teachers,” he pointed out.

He said teachers have an important role to educate the life of the nation, especially young people as the next generation.

Ibnu Sina hopes teachers who take part in transformational teachers program  to be more skillful to create more progress learning format and keep up with the times.

He emphasized that students must obtain learning materials from qualified teachers.

According to him, a qualified teacher will produce thousands or even millions of golden generation that will bring changes and progress of a nation.

Ibnu Sina expounded that transformational teachers is the Kemendikbudristek program. Here teachers are educated for six months before being elevated to the status of transformational teacher.

To select a principal of school now, he said, no need to go through long stages and process. Through transformational teacher program the quality of a teacher is considered to meet the requirements and capacity both for basic, elementary to high school.

Meanwhile, Head of Banjarmasin Education Office Nuryadi said that transformational teachers produce a lot of positive things.

“The quality of our education is increasing, of course competency are all good,” he said.
