Chairman of the South Kalimantan Management Board of Indonesian Farmers Union (DPW-SPI) Dwi Putra Kurniawan said that Asian, African, and European countries have a high interest in local Borneo coffee typical of South Kalimantan.

“Counties such as Qatar, Egypt and European countries are interested in Borneo coffee typical of South Kalimantan, and have even asked for shipments of up to 200 tons,” he said here on Saturday, May 27, 2023.

Coffee lovers from abroad like Borneo coffee typical of South Kalimantan, he said, because it has a distinctive taste compared to coffee from outside Kalimantan.

“South Kalimantan's Borneo coffee does not contain volcanic soil and grows in tropical forest, thus it has a different taste from other regions,” Dwi pointed out.

Local coffee type in South Kalimantan include liberica, excelsa, and robusta.

The local coffee from South Kalimantan is not only in demand by foreign countries, he said, even request from outside the island are often up to tens of tons.

However, he admitted that the availability of local South Kalimantan coffee is still limited that it has not been able to meet the demand which reaches hundreds of tons.

The area of South Kalimantan local coffee plantation, he said, is 300 hectares with about 80 percent of the population in forest and the rest close to community settlements.

Dwi, who is the founder of Biji Kopi Borneo, said that he and South Kalimantan SPI have coordinated with the local government to continue to make efforts to develop the potential of local coffee.

He hopes the local government pay more serious attention to increasing coffee in South Kalimantan.

He also said that in  a year South Kalimantan is able to export Borneo coffee beans up to four times.

Dwi said that Borneo coffee typical of South Kalimantan must continue to be introduced as regional heritage.
