Amuntai, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - More than three thousands residents of North Hulu Sungai (HSU), South Kalimantan, can not read and write.
Head of Equality, Literacy and Skills Education Section at the HSU Education Agency Basuki Rahman in Amuntai on Friday said from as many as 3,173 of illiterate people some 1,973 are of 7-18 years of age.
"The number of children aged up to 15 years of illiterates is equal to 3.66 percent of North Hulu Sungai population need seriusly to be literated through formal and non formal education," said Basuki.
Basuki said that there is a functional literacy program in the Education Agency to eradicate illiteracy by providing reading and writing education in learning centers or PKBM.
In addition, he said, the Education Agency also promoting education through the institution of early childhood education or PAUD.
He added that education for illiterate people also directed to some salafiyah boarding school to motivate the students to learn to read and write.
While information from the Education Agency program mentioned data accuracy of the number of illiterate people are more likely bigger, whereas the difficulty found by officers to dig information from residents who partly embarrassed to claim illiteracy.
