Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Banjarmasin Mayor Ibnu Sina and South Kalimantan Legislative Council (DPRD) Speaker Hj Noormiliyani Aberani Sulaiman released a male proboscis monkey named David in Bakut island in the middle of Barito River (about 15 kilometers west of Banjarmasin) on Sunday.


"I with the mayor and Bekantan Friends Community Indonesia (SBI) deliberately release bekantan in Bakut Island which is a nature reserve and the habitat of endangered species conservation," said DPRD speaker.

The release of the proboscis (nasalis larvatus) marked the 2016 Proboscis Monkey Day in Bakut Island, Barito Kuala.

The release of protected animals, according to her, not merely ceremonial, but implies together to preserve nature, including the rare animals of various kinds.

Therefore, she hoped, for those who have a proboscis to release these animals into the wild or to a conservation area with the involvement of SBI South Kalimantan.

In addition to the Bakut Island, proboscis monkeys are also found in some areas surrounding watersheds (DAS) of Barito, namely Tamban Lupak, Kaget Island and Tabunganen with a small amount or endangered animals due to nature and human factors.

Previously Chairman of SBI South Kalimantan Amelia Rezeki said in addition to releasing the proboscis to its habitat, the SBI also planted trees that become the food of the animal.
