Banjarmasin Mayor Ibnu Sina expressed his desire to realize the Biuku River in Sungai Andai Urban Village, North Banjarmasin, a truly natural tourist attraction.

"We want Buiku River to become a tourist attraction with a natural touch, where there are Banjar traditional houses complete with jukung (traditional boat), decorated with local vegetation, accompanied by the presence of animals, such as biuku or bidawang," he said to reporters.

Biuku is one of the species of freshwater turtles in Indonesia that are almost extinct due to hunting and predators.

While bidawang or bulus (Amyda cartilaginea) is known as the Asiatic softshell turtle or common softshell turtle.

After the initial exposure to the preparation of the feasibility study and master plan for Sungai Biuku tourist village at Rattan In Hotel, Wednesday, the Mayor said he had asked Technikatama consultant to make a master plan for the development of the tourist attraction.

If it is realized, Banjarmasin will have a leading river-based tourist attraction, with traditional life, agriculture land, typical culinary, small and medium enterprises, as well as the emergence of new businesses.

Therefore, the Mayor asked for the support of all parties in an effort to achieve the desire. This means they are plotted according to the master plan, not to be preceded by other parties, especially developers.

Previously, the Head of Banjarmasin Culture and Tourism Office Ikkhsan Alhaq said that the exposure was aimed at identifying the feasibility of Sungai Biuku as a sustainable tourist village.

He hopes other tourist attractions, including Pulau Bromo, Sungai Jingah, Kuin Kacil, also have a master plan, so they have clear future development.

In the discussion, several suggestions and opinions came out, including an environmentalist Uncle Anum from Forum Komunitas Hijau. He hopes that the development of Sungai Biuku will not eliminate its uniqueness as rambutan garden center, such as the  garuda rambutan, timbul rambutan, antalagi, batu, dangut, and gula batu rambutan.

"It will be beautiful if Sungai Biuku becomes a rambutan agrotourism. Tourists enjoy nature while cruising the river and picking rambutan from its tree. In addition, local vegetation is maintained, such as putat trees, gayam trees, rambai padi trees, jingah, mundo, and others, which can withstand abrasion on the riverbank, and its roots can become a habitat for aquatic biota," he said.
