The processing of snakehead fish (locally known as haruan) was begun by fish farmers in Paminggir Sub-district after they learned its health benefits and received training from the North Hulu Sungai chapter of the National Handicraft Council (Dekranasda HSU).

Chief of Pal Batu Village, Paminggir Sub-district, Suriani here on Wednesday (30/6) said that the production of snakehead fish in his village is quite abundant.

"Everyday fish farmers always bring their catch. Sometimes we just sell it to collectors for IDR25 thousand per kg," he said.

Suriani said that the residents began processing snakehead fish meat into snakehead fish oil (albumin) and processed food, such as crackers, nuggets, meatballs, and others after Dekranasda provided training.

Compared to the price of raw snakehead fish meat, said Suriani, it turns out that the selling price of snakehead fish oil is much more expensive, while the manufacturing process is quite short, only one night assisted by an extraction machine.

Even fish meat dregs after the extraction process can still be used to make snack products, such as crackers, shredded meat, nuggets, and so on.
