Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Dozens hectares of rice fields in Central Hulu Sungai or HST threatened failure for nearly a week the newly planted rice seedlings were flooded.


Some of them are in  Kumpang Maligung, Aluan Besar, and Simpang Mahar, Batu Benawa sub-district, said local residents informed Antaranews Kalsel, Banjarmasin on Saturday.

The reason, said Muhran (55), a Batu Benawa resident, when the water in the rice fields has begun to come down, flooding comes inundating the rice plants.

While the endurance of newly planted rice seedlings in the field does not exceed five days. If up to a week under water in general they likely die or fail planting.

Benawa River, which is upstream of Barabai River, since dawn on Saturday (31/1) overflowing again, after heavy rain almost all night.

"If it rains in the lower reaches, although two days and two nights, then Benawa which is tipped in the Meratus will not overflow. But due to heavy rains in the upstream region it causing flooding," he said.
