Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Technical Implementation Unit of Sultan Adam Public Forest Park (here known as Taman Hutan Rakyat) South Kalimantan has been successful in breeding sambar deer from only six to 14 now.


Sultan Adam Tahura Head Akhmad Ridhani in Banjarmasin on Wednesday said, since sambar deer or "Cervus unicolor" brought in from Central Kalimantan, its breeding has no significant obstacles. "Mandiangin mountainous region is apparently quite fit with sambar's live, so it fast breeding," he said. In fact, he said, one of the deer, named Surti, once released by the Deputy Governor of South Kalimantan, Rudy Resnawan, just gave birth, so the total is now 14 deers.

Sambar is a native deer of Kalimantan which is now difficult to find in the wild, because many people hunted for meat and horns. In an area of one hectare, UPT (Technical Implementation Unit) Tahura continue to breed sambar, so as not to extinct, as well as to become a natural tourist attraction of Mandiangin. Sambar is one of the quite tame animals and easy to communicate with human.

It was proven, though they were in the woods, at the time the pawang or handler called the name of one of the deer, it will immediately come closer. It fodder also quite available in abundance in nature, such as grass, bran, and banana, making it easier for officers to take care of the deer that was developed in the region since 2012 ago in Mandiangin.
