South Kalimantan Governor Sahbirin Noor stayed up all night to help flood victims. He visited them in various areas of Banjar District, including in Karang Intan, Martapura Timur, and Martapura Kota Sub-districts.

His action began in the night after Isha prayer on Saturday (Jan 16, 2021) until noon on Sunday (Jan 17, 2021).

Uncle Birin (his popular nickname) came with various food aid. He also encouraged residents to be resilient in facing the disaster of floods.

He mingled with them to prepare public kitchens in villages he visited. “To help victims so they are not hungry, we need many public kitchens in various locations,” said Uncle Birin.

Spontaneously, Uncle Birin stopped by the stalls he passed. He bought food and basic necessities and then distributed them directly to the local residents.

“Get used to buying at traditional stalls to help people's economy, especially in this flood condition a movement is needed to restore the economy by shopping at traditional stalls or at least our neighbor stalls,” he said.

Uncle Birin continues to monitor the condition of floods to ascertain there are no more victims and all residents can be evacuated. All elements of the provincial government have been ordered to move and do their best to help the affected residents.

“Residents who have not been touched by assistance, I apologize if I personally have not been able to come to you. But I have directed all elements of the provincial government to continuously monitor people who need help,” he said.

When inspecting the Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Uncle Birin ordered all BPBD ranks to be fully alert to help flood victims.
