Tanjung, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - The Tabalong Health Agency implements self help latrine program (known as Jawara) in order to overcome the limitation of access to healthy family sanitation as well as to change the behavior to be a clean and healthy society.


Head of Health Agency, Syarifudin Basri, here on Wednesday said the program run through the empowerment of communities to analyze their own state of environment caused by the habit of defecation
(locally popular as BABS).

"With people self-help latrine program, communities should be able to access healthy latrine facilities independently without assistance or subsidies from the outside," said Syarifudin.

Healthy latrine is that latrines able to break the chain of transmission of the disease by fecal either directly or through an animal.

Said Syarifuddin, Jawara program is in line with Community-Led Total Sanitation program (STBM) with several design innovations from the local government to achieve the conditions of the area where people are free from BABS behavior (Open Defecation Free /ODF) in the hope of reducing the incidence of infectious diseases based environment.

Data in local health show of 48,356 pieces of household toilets inspected sanitation, as many as 43,559 pieces of qualified health with the number of households reached 74.77 percent.

Meanwhile, 16,551 households not accessing healthy latrines and there are many people who use the Tabalong river flow as a bowel movement.
