Banjarmasin Mayor H Ibnu Sina inaugurated Antasan Pulau Bromo Bridge which connected the city mainland with the tiny Island of Bromo, Monday.
This is one of the islands in the city. The island, which has a population of 1,250 of 750 families, is flanked by the Martapura River and Barito River. It has four neighborhood units (RT), namely 04, 05, 06, and 07 in Mantuil Urban Village, South Banjarmasin.
However, before the inauguration, the bridge had to be closed temporarily, because it was too crowded with residents and feared to cause the transmission of COVID-19.
"Indeed, the impact of this bridge is extraordinary, it now becomes a tourist destination, although the substance is not actually for tourism. This is for residents of Bromo Island, who as long as this country is independent they have no road access to their area," Mayor said.
He expressed his gratitude for the appreciation of the community for this bridge as pride, so many people visited it.
"But because of the COVID-19 pandemic is still high, so we ask the public to continue to adhere to health protocol, while we close the tourist area," said Ibnu Sina.
He asked the community to maintain the bridge which was built using about IDR40 billion of the city budget (APBD), so it could last a long time.
The Antasan Pulau Bromo is a suspension type bridge, only 2.15 meters wide with the main span length of 100 meters.
Because the bridge, which began construction in July 2020, is about 15 meters high from the river water surface, the up and down the road is made to rotate like a circle or like a roller coaster game.
Head of Culture and Tourism Agency Ikhsan Al-Haq acknowledged that the Antasan Pulau Bromo Bridge has become the newest tourist icon in the city.
However, it must be realized that this bridge is a road infrastructure for local people's public access, not a tourist bridge, only the view of the bridge and its green open space facilities are tourist objects.
"Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, so we ask the public to be patient to visit it because it is feared that there will be transmission there," he said.
