The Banjarmasin Naval Base dispensed 3.000 masks to residents along the city's riverbank, South Kalimantan.
"We deliberately target residents who live on the riverbank to be educated about health protocol through the distribution of masks. They have not had much education about COVID-19," said the Commander of Banjarmasin Naval Base Sea Col. (P) Sandharianto, Friday.
According to him, the distribution of masks was a form of concern of the naval base in an effort to help accelerate the containing of COVID-19 in South Kalimantan, especially in Banjarmasin City.
The provincial capital recorded the highest confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in South Kalimantan. Even with a relatively high death toll in Indonesia for the city level.
Based on data from the COVID-19 Task Force as of August 21, 2020 there were 2,690 positive cases in Banjarmasin, 737 were being treated, 1,804 recovered, and 149 died.
Sandharianto also asked his members to socialize Banjarmasin Mayor Regulation (Perwali) Number 60 of 2020 concerning the obligation to wear the mask.
"Make sure that every citizen who is doing activities outside the house to wear a mask. Let us together fight this pandemic by complying with the COVID-19 prevention protocol so it can be ended a soon as possible," said the commander.
The distribution of masks carried out by Navy soldiers together with other maritime communities by targeting five points, namely the area around Trisakti Port, Banjar Raya fish auction dock, Pasir Mas kelotok (river motorboat) terminal, Sudimampir Market pier, and Bawang Martapura Lama port.
