The outbreak of the highly contagious COVID-19 since the end of March in Tabalong District brought changes in various sectors, one of which education.

Learning activities are carried out at home online, including for vocation students who cannot do practical learning at school.

But the condition did not dampen the enthusiasm of studying for the state high vocational school of SMK Negeri 1 Tanjung, especially the dressmaking major. In the midst of pandemic, they turned obstacles into learning opportunities from home while contributing to the coronavirus handling.

Since 2018, this school's major has been one of the beneficiaries of Adaro's Independent Vocation program under the pillar of Adaro Turn On Science which implements Teaching Factory (a learning method with an industry approach).

“In the pandemic the medical personnel and dressmaking workers have an important role. Medical personnel goes forward to never retreat in combating the plague. Why should the tailors withdraw?" said Yuyun Khoriatin, one of the dressmaking productive teacher of the SMK Negeri 1 Tanjung.

With their expertise in sewing, teachers and students were able to provide 1,000 non-medical masks to the South Kalimantan Education Office to be distributed to the public.

The lack of availability of hazmat clothing for medical staff in Tabalong encouraged them to work together with SMK Negeri 1 Pugaan and volunteers from community to voluntarily make personal protective equipment (PPE) in the form of hazmats and masks.

They opened donations to all public until the fund collected to provide the raw material for making PPE and masks.

A total of 80 hazmat clothings and more than 500 masks finally made which then handed over to several hospitals and puskesmas (community health centers) in the Tabalong and Balangan Disrict.
