Delivery service company J&T Express recorded a surge in the volume of shipments, handling up to 3 million packages per day during the month of Ramadhan, including the peak period around Eid al-Fitr.

In a statement released on Friday in Jakarta, J&T Express CEO Robin Lo said shipments increased significantly by around 50 percent during Eid this year.

"Since entering the month of Ramadhan 2020, we predicted that there would be a significant increase because we saw an increase in online transactions during the pandemic, as we recorded from the third week of May, there has been an increase in shipments of about 50 percent compared to the Eid holiday period last year," he stated.

He further said his office had committed to serving customers without taking any days off from the beginning of the pandemic in order to serve the community, including supporting economic turnover through package delivery for e-commerce transactions.

Transactions from e-commerce marketplaces still dominated during the Ramadhan to Eid period, he added. The surge in demand for delivery shipments was seen as an impact of the government's appeal and regulations to make people stay at home and not travel during the holidays.

Furthermore, the fashion, gadgets, and beauty products segments dominated shipments during Ramadhan this year.

In addition to increasing the number of fleet and employees to keep operations running optimally during the Eid period, J&T Express also deployed an automatic sorting machine capable of sorting 30,000 packages per hour for 108 destinations.

The company said it is currently testing its latest two-tier automatic sorting technology with the ability to sort up to 1.5 million packages per day.

Meanwhile, J&T Express said it is prioritizing the health and comfort of employees in the midst of the unprecedented circumstances, and ensuring each employee follows an occupational health protocol for the convenience of customers right up till delivery. (INE)
