The Banjarmasin Environment Agency revealed that the capacity of Basirih Final Waste Disposal (TPA), managed by the city government, will run out in five years.
Head Dept of Cleanliness and Waste Management of Banjarmasin Environment Agency Marzuki here on Monday (Nov 18, 2019) said, by accomodating mostly of 500 to 600 tons of waste the city produces per day the waste disposal is getting narrower and estimated to run out in five years.
"It means this waste disposal is very old and estimated to have only five years to run out of capacity," Jack, his nickname, pointed out.

He said, people should know this current condition of the Basirih Landfill, in order not to produce waste excessively.
"If the waste can be composted or recycled, do it to reduce the waste dumped into the landfill," he said.
The Basirih Landfill, he explained, has an area of 40 hectares, but after it has been operating for decades, the room to accomodate garbage keep getting narrow to less than 10 hectares. It needs immediate expansion.

If not, Jack continued, while waste production continues to increase, it running out of capacity will be faster than expected.
"Thus there are some steps to reduce garbage that we continue to socialize, including the Mayor's regulation concerning prohibition of modern shop to provide plastic bags for customers, in order not to become garbage," he stressed.

Other steps, Jack explaned, by disposing garbage to the regional landfill managed by the provincial government in Banjarbaru.
"Insya Allah next year we will begin to send garbage there," he said.
