Vice President Jusuf Kalla bestowed the 2019 Kalpataru awards on individuals, groups, and representatives of local governments that had excelled in the field of environment.
"For us, the forest is the main source for improving the environment. Thank you to the figures, who improve the environment and forests and expand the forest area," Kalla remarked during the opening of the Environment and Forestry Week at JCC Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday.
The vice president highlighted that forests had become instrumental in controlling floods and droughts that could unexpectedly hit the area.
A reduction in the area of forests in Indonesia had led to floods and droughts that struck Konawe and Southeast Sulawesi.
"If the number of forests decreases, the water source during the dry season will no longer be available," the vice president cautioned.
Hence, Kalla emphasized that groups in the regions that had protected the forests and environment were worthy of receiving an award from the government.
