The Government of Kotabaru District, South Kalimantan, ought to think about converting seawater into freshwater (desalination) in a large scale to overcome water crisis as it just happened after Mount Tirawan reservoir collapsed, a legislator said.


Deputy Speaker of Kotabaru Legislative Council (DPRD) Muhammad Arif here on Thursdy said a new breakthrough is needed to anticipate the crisis, either conventionally by maximizing the existing infrastructure, such as a dam or reservoir, of by finding other way out.  

"We (legislative) keep coordinating related to tackling water crisis in Kotabaru as a result of  the collapse of Tirawan reservoir," he emphasized.

The coordination was meant to decide a short term policy, to overcome the crisis, and a long term policy to anticipate.

The legislative expected government agencies to be active and optimizing their role to function maximally the existing retention basins, such as Mount Perak, Mount Ulin, and other reservoirs.

In addition, he said, a real movement which involve community is needed in utilizing rainwater, owing Kotabaru has a high potential of rainfall.

"At the same time we keep making our effort either in the provinncial level or central government to participate in finding the best way out for providing clean water in the Bumi Saijaan (Kotabaru's nickname)," he said.
