A total 100 mangrove trees were planted in two locations, at estuary of the beach and on shoreline behind SMAN 1 Kusan Hilir.
The mangrove planting was to reduce abrasion, namely the erosion of beaches due to seawaves.
Mangrove trees have strong roots and can resist erosion, thus they are very important for preserving beaches.
The activity continued with attaching stakes to the newly planted trees. The stakes were to maintain the mangrove trees, especially from strong waves and sea current.
According to Wahidah, the mangrove planting action was a clear example of collaboration between universities and schools in preserving environment.
This action is hoped to increase people awareness about the importance of protecting coastal ecosystem and reducing the risk of natural disaster due to abrasion.
"The Batulicin Polytechnic also handed over trash bin as a symbol of support for Adiwiyata program," said Wahidah.
