Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Mayor of Banjarmasin Ibnu Sina preserving high value rare wood, ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri) or locally known as ulin.
Ironwood conservation effort by Mayor Ibnu Sina conducted by planting seed in the city center, which is in the yard of sportshall GOR Hasanuddin HM at Jalan Pangeran Antasari on Sunday.
Ulin once widely used as building materials, for houses, bridges, electricity poles, and shipping. Ulin is wet tropical forest timber species that grow naturally in the region of Southern Sumatra and Kalimantan.
Planting seed of rare wood by the mayor marked the greening action undertaken by Forum Komuninas Hijau (FKH) or Green Community Forum to provide ironwood seedlings along with about 200 other timber seedlings at the site.
A second planting by City Development Planning Board (Bappeko) Ir Fajar Desira witnessed by about a hundred greening volunteers, including municipal government officials and members of the local FKH.
Ibnu Sina hoped ironwood can grow in the city. In addition to greening and beauty as well as a means of education, because the ironwood is rare and difficult to find except in the middle of the jungle, he said.
