Banjarbaru, March 16 (Antara Kalsel) - Indonesia fell lower in global competitiveness, according to Global Growth Competitiveness Index as reported by the World Economic Forum , 2012-2013.

Indonesia is ranked the 50th among 144 countries surveyed down from the 46th among 142 countries surveyed in the previous year, Minister for Research and Technology Gusti Muhamad Hatta said.

Indonesia is far below other Asean countries, Hatta said, citing Singapore is ranked the 2nd, Malaysia the 25th, Brunei the 28th and Thailand the 38th.

"The decline in rank causes us great concern as the ranks reflect the technological capability of a country," he said.

Indonesia, therefore, needs to move faster to catch up with other countries in technology , he told a function here on Friday.

He said Indonesia is far less productive compared with many other countries in scientific and technological publications.

He cited in the period of 2001-2010, Indonesia had only 7,843 international scientific publications as against more than 30,000 publications each by Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

"It all adds to the challenges we have to face. We have to work hard in conducting researches to be more competitive," he said.

He said one of the programs of the research and technology ministry to boost scientific publications is to carry out more intensive researches.

He called on all high educational institutions and research institutes in the country to take part in the program .
