Head of the Banjarmasin Public Works and Spatial Planning Office Arifin Noor stated that it is deserved for the provincial capital to have a flood pump engine to deal with inundation due to poorly functioning drainage.

Arifin Noor here on Tuesday revealed plans for handling puddle water on the protocol road if heavy rains arrived, in addition to maximizing drainage repairs.

In the reason of budget is limited, he said, the quick step is to do maximum cleaning manually, because the garbage accumulates in the drainage.

"Our officers are constantly trying to do drainage cleaning intensively, even going directly into the underwater area, because there is a lot of mud, garbage and so on which makes it less smooth," he said.

The dilemma for the city of Banjarmasin, it is below sea level, so that the tide enters through drainage.

"If heavy rains occur together with high tides, drainage cannot accommodate, so the water overflows," explained Arifin.

Because of that, he said, there was a thought to overcome it with a water pump engine, like that of the DKI Jakarta, for handling floods.

"We have coordinated this plan with Environment Agency, can it be procured from that agency or from our agency," he said.
