Member of Commission II DPRD Tabalong Mursalin requested that rice fields in Bilas Village, Upau Sub-district not to be converted into coal mining land.

The reason is that hundreds of hectares of paddy fields in Bilas Village have been surrounded by coal mining activities.

"We recommend that paddy fields be maintained and do not let farmers sell to mining companies," Mursalin said while attending a thanksgiving event before harvesting rice fields in Bilas Village.

Mursalin also called attention to the local government to limit coal mining activities in Upau Sub-district, because it threatened the sustainability of the community's rice fields.

The same thing was conveyed by Deputy Regent Tabalong Mawardi that the Bilas Village rice field is indeed to be maintained.

"I am committed that rice fields to not become mining areas in order to support increased rice production," explained Mawardi.

Meanwhile, the area of paddy fields in Bilas Village, Masingai Village, and Lok Batu Village, which are adjacent to the coal mine, amount to around 216 hectares.

According to one local agriculture instructor, Hery Lestiawan, the impact of mining activities has caused paddy fields to be flooded during the rainy season.

"Every year it can grow rice three times but is constrained by flooding if it is raining," explained Hery.

Whereas in the dry season not all paddy fields can have sufficient water supply.
