Balikpapan (Antaranews Kalsel) - East Kalimantan immediately will own the first toll road in Kalimantan with the completion of the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road up to 85.7 percent, as confirmed by President Joko Widodo through the @jokowi twitter account sent Saturday, February 16.

"The island of Kalimantan will have toll roads for the first time. The length is 99.35 km from Balikpapan to Samarinda. Until the beginning of this month, the construction has reached 85.7 percent," wrote President Jokowi.

"This toll road cuts travel time from Balikpapan to Samarinda, from three (two) hours to just one hour," continued the President.

The construction of this toll road consumes a budget of Rp9.9 trillion from the funding scheme of the Government and Business Entity Cooperation (KPBU).

The project is carried out by the PT Jasamarga Balikpapan-Samarinda Toll Road Business Entity (BUJT) which works on Sections 2, 3, and 4 or a total of 66.43 kilometers.

The construction of the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road consisting of 4 2-way lines began in 2010, during the time of Governor Awang Faroek Ishak.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono inaugurated its construction along with a number of other infrastructure projects, including the Kariangau Container Port.

But later in 2012 the construction stopped because of difficulties in financing and increasing land prices that the government had to release.

Only in November 2015 did the project resume. In March 2016 President Joko Widodo reviewed the project accompanied by Governor Awang Faroek who now had to sit in a wheelchair because of his deteriorating health condition.

"Construction has already finished 7.6 km and the total investment will be approximately Rp. 13 trillion," the President said at the time.

The President also mentioned that land acquisition was a problem in many infrastructure projects, including the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road project.

At that time the President claimed to be relieved, because the land acquisition for the project had reached 85 percent.
