Kotabaru, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - The Kotabaru Legislative Council, South Kalimantan, is asking for support from the central government to establish a fisheries school so that the community can manage their fisheries and marine potential maximally.

Deputy Speaker of Kotabaru DPRD Muhammad Arif here Saturday said there are many reasons to make Kotabaru have to have a fisheries-based educational institution, one of which was huge potential.

"Kotabaru is mostly marine waters, so the majority of the people are fishermen," he said.

Meanwhile, he continued, the level of welfare of the fishing community here is recognized as still relatively lacking.

According to him, the magnitude of the natural resource potential of the marine sector in Kotabaru has not been managed optimally, due to the limited human resources (HR) who truly understand fisheries.

"Many people, especially teenagers, are willing and interested in studying fisheries, but in reality schools that specifically teach this field do not exist in Kotabaru," he said.

Even though in the past, said Arif, in Kotabaru there was once a fishery school that was initiated by the private sector or a company in the fisheries sector, but the school had not existed for a long time.

Other reason, the PPP politician explained, is that there are quite a lot of human resources who possessed the scientific discipline of fisheries and maritime affairs from Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) alumni.

They can be empowered to become teaching staff in Kotabaru so that their knowledge can contribute to the community, especially the fishermen, which in turn can improve their welfare.

"We, from the leadership of the Kotabaru council, schedule a consultation meeting with the central government through the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) to include the program for establishing the school in Kotabaru," Arif said.
