Kotabaru, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - PT PLN is building a 150 KV submarine cable electricity infrastructure to connect the electricity system in South and Central Kalimantan with Pulau Laut, Kotabaru District.

PT PLN's Kalimantan Regional Business Director Machnizon Masri said the sea cable began to be installed from the Batulicin landing point to Pulau Laut along the four-kilometer circuit (kms).

"The electricity system in Pulau Laut is isolated. The sea cable is a bridge so that (the system in) Kalimantan can get here," he said in Kotabaru on Thursday.

Machnizon explained that currently the electricity needs in Kotabaru, which is only 12 MW, have been fulfilled by the Kotabaru Diesel Power Station (PLTD) with a capacity of 16.2 MW.

But with the interconnection system, people will no longer rely on PLTD. The main supply of electricity in Kotabaru will be the Barito System.

"The electricity system in Kalimantan is stronger. In the future if the PLTD here is damaged, there should not be a blackout," he said.

This project is a strategic program that has been planned and is included in the 2016-2025 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). Not only to meet electricity needs in Kotabaru, but also for the efficiency of the operational costs of power plants in Pulau Laut.

"Electricity in Kalimantan is cheaper because it is produced by a power plant, while PLTD electricity prices are two to three times more expensive because they use diesel fuel," he said.

To realize interconnection, PLN also builds other electrical infrastructure such as the 150 KV extra-high voltage power lines (SUTT) tower and the substation (GI).

A total of 109 SUTT towers are built, 94 towers in Kotabaru, and 15 towers in Batulicin, with a total network length of 37.5 kms. Whereas a 30 MVA GI is built in Batulicin and Kotabaru.
