Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - Chancellor of the University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) Prof. Dr. H Sutarto Hadi hopes that the utilization of forest products can be done creatively and effectively so as to maintain sustainability.

Sutarto was speaking when he opened the National Seminar entitled "Optimizing Forest Product Utilization in Order to Support the Green Revolution Program" held at the Rodhita Hotel Banjarbaru.

According to him, the threat of forest erosion is a serious problem and must be anticipated as early as possible with a variety of conservation efforts. The ULM also fully supports the green revolution movement which is initiated by the Governor of South Kalimantan H Sahbirin Noor.

"Wood that is used massively will run out. On the other hand, replanting efforts need a long process," he pointed out.

Sutarto declared that currently non-timber forest products have become the focus of ULM in its use to make various superior products from natural materials in the forests of Kalimantan.

"We have made 41 products of non-timber forest products such as honey, tea from cinnamon to organic fertilizer. Research activities to utilize these natural materials continue to be echoed so that we no longer depend on processed wood made from logging trees," he said.

While the Dean of the ULM Faculty of Forestry Ir. H Sunardi revealed that the national seminar is an annual agenda in cooperation with the South Kalimantan Forestry Agency.

"The results of the discussion in this seminar can be a reference for the government in taking steps and policies regarding the handling, preservation, and utilization of forest products for the welfare of the community without threatening the sustainability of the forest itself," he explained.

Sunardi admitted that the raw materials for wood from the forests of South Kalimantan are very thinning. The 1.7 million hectares of forest area designated by the government is not all forested.

"Even now wood that grows in secondary forests also cut down. Like the word, as long as small-scale batten wood is made, it is also used. Including fruit trees such as durians have also been used as wood materials," he explained.

The seminar featured 6 main speakers consisting of the Head of the South Kalimantan Forestry Agency Dr Hanif Faisol Nurrofiq, Deputy Information on Energy and Technology Materials of BPPT Prof. Dr. Eniya Listiani Dewi and Head of the Production and Industry Division of the East Java Perhutani Ir Yono Cahyono.
