Banjarbaru, S Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Banjarbaru Municipal Government is ready to repair and re-activate natural water channel (or what locally called as guntung) to prevent water puddles or floods that may occur after heavy rains.

Banjarbaru City Secretary Said Abdullah here on Thursday said "guntung" is very effective in preventing flooding, as it becomes a rainwater drainer.

"The lower position of guntung will drain rainwater to the rivers, so even though it rains heavily, the water keeps flowing and does not stagnate, let alone flood," he said.

However, he admitted, now many guntungs are missing, either because it was intentionally closed or closed due to the house, building, or was dumped into the road body.

In fact, he said, the number of guntungs scattered almost in all areas of the city to reach hundreds, that Banjarbaru free of puddles or floods during the rainy season.

The existence of the guntung also makes a number of areas in the city took the name, such as Guntung Payung Urban Village and Guntung Manggis Urban Village.

Given the important function of the guntung to prevent flooding, in the near future inventory of point and location of the guntung will be carried out.

"We ask the relevant offices and agencies to inventory the guntung and see the condition if good then it can be re-activated as a natural water channel to the river," he said.

Meanwhile, one of the impacts of disfunctional guntungs and drainages was the occurrence of a flood on Jala Ahmad Yani at km 26 and 27 km, on Tuesday.

The conditions have made the state road inundated with water as high as 30 centimeters and resulted in inhibition of land transportation routes.
