The mass action "Aksi Merdeka Sampah" (Waste Freedom Action) on Friday (January 19, 2024) has collected 4.39 tons of garbage along the protocol road of Jalan A Yani, South Kalimantan Province.

Head of South Kalimantan Environment Office Hanifah Dwi Nirwana said that the action was carried out in Banjarmasin City, Banjar District, and Banjarbaru City from kilometer 4 to 17 Jalan A Yani.

The action involved the provincial government state civil apparatus (ASN), Army soldiers from Korem 101/Antasari, Kodim 1006/Banjar, Kodim 1007/Banjarmasin, the local Koramil, ASN from Banjarmasin City, and ASN Banjar District.

"In total more than 700 people (took part)," she said.

The garbage that mostly plastic was then sent to the Regional Waste Final Disposal (TPA) of Banjarbakula in Banjarbaru City.

"The other part was sent to Basirih Landfill in Banjarmasin and Cahaya Kencana Landfill in Banjar," she said.

The joint action, she explained, was a form of campaign organized by the South Kalimantan Provincial Government to invite all level of society to care about the environment and be responsible for waste.

"It is known that along the protocol road to Banjarbaru, especially Jalan A Yani, there are still rubbish scattered in the rivers, and there are also illegal waste disposal, where people leave domestic garbage along the road," she said.

Hanifah hopes with the joint clean up action along the Jalan A Yani --which is the main inter-regional road in the province-- the protocol road becomes clean and people will be reluctant to throw rubbish along the road.

"Hopefully this action can be continued by districts and cities, even in their respective environment," she said.
