Banjarmasin, S Kalimatan (ANTARA) - The South Kalimantan Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD Kalsel) is increasing its preparedness to face the potential of forest and land fires, one of which is by proposing six helicopters to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Head of the agency's Prevention and Preparedness Bambang Dedi Mulyadi said that anticipating measures have been prepared in accordance with the directions of South Kalimantan Governor H Muhidin and Deputy Governor H Hasnuryadi Sulaiman.

“Alhamdulillah (Thank God), we continue to increase preparedness ahead of dry season, one of which is working with BMKG o monitor data on development of current season,” he said when confirmed here on Monday.

The BPBD has made various technical preparations, including providing facilities and infrastucture, monitoring personnel capabilites, and intensively coordinating with BNPB.

“The Governor has proposed five water bombing helicopters and a patrol helicopter to BNPB. In addition, name of weather modification operator (OMC) also proposed if artificial rain is needed to fill reservoirs or dams,” he said.

In the near future, the BPBD will hold a coordination meeting to determine forest and land fire emergency status at provincial level, which will entirely based on data and analysis from BMKG.

“If South Kalimantan is declared on alert status, then all mitigation efforts will be maximized and we will prepare extra, including the placement of helicopters that will adjust to the status,” he added.

Currently, Banjarbaru City is the first region in South Kalimantan to have declared a forest and land fire emergency status.

The South Kalimantan BPBD appeals to all elements of  society, especially in fire prone areas to remain alert and not to burn land. Synergy between government and community is needed to prevent a greater disaster.
