Yellow butterflies have recently "invaded" the area of Paringin, Balangan District, South Kalimantan Province.
One of the district residents, Acil Iyah, in Paringin Selatan, Friday, said that there are a lot of butterflies in villages and bushes since the last half a month.
She said this was the first time a swarm of butterflies overwhelming Paringin area.
Many yellow butterflies are also found in the sub-districts of Tebing Tinggi, Awayan, Paringin Selatan, Batu Mandi, Juai, and Halong.
Some residents said butterflies have the potential to cause pest because they give birth to small caterpillars.
Like othr insect, butterflies reproduce by laying eggs(ovipar). The eggs then hatch into caterpillarsa or butterfly larvae. The catterpillar's job is to consume enough food to support itself during the metamorphosis process.
Based on Wikipedia, sulfur butterflies or yellow butterflies are the name of a group of small butterflies from the genus Eurema, members of Pieridae family. It got it name because of its bright yellow color, more or less resembling the color of sulfur. The general name in English is grass yellow.
Eurema is a widespread genus of grass yellow butterflies in the family Pieridae.
Species range from Asia, Africa, Australia, and Oceania, to the New World. The type species is the North American barred yellow (Eurema daira).
There are over 70 species in the genus, but more than 300 synonymous names have been applied to them. Some species, such as the common African grass yellow (E. hecabe) have over 80 synonyms. The genus itself has over 15 junior generic synonyms. This is the price of being a widespread taxon, as well as a zoogeographical problem.
