Tanjung, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Inmates of Maburai Correctional Institution (lapas) in Sub-district of Murung Pudak, Tabalong, South Kalimantan, produce various crafts such as miniature monument torches and rattan basket.
According to the Head of Sub-section of Prison Guidance Endy making various handicrafts ranging from wicker baskets to miniature torch monument is part of a coaching program for the inmates.
"Since five years ago Maburai Prison has a workshop and is now able to produce a variety of handicrafts made by inmates," said Endy in Tanjung, Tuesday.
The work of inmates have even become a favorite souvenir for Tabalong local government's guests from outside the district in view of torch monument is an iconic of `Earth Saraba Kawa` (Tabalong).
In one month, five inmates who are good at making crafts torch monument miniature can produce up to 10 and is sold at a price of Rp250 thousand to Rp300,000.
While wicker basket made by the inmates are already entered in the craft exhibition in national level.
Maburai Prison head Teguh Suroso said training for the inmates, in addition to personality, also the independence to train them to be skilled citizens.
"Through vocational training inmates are expected to be more independent and Alhamdulillah the results of their work can be useful for other people," said Teguh.
He said the current occupants of Maburai prisons is 127 people with the number of employees 39 people.
