Head of Tapin Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Raniansyah said that the possibility of the death of a farmer, Supian Suri (55), because of not wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when struggling to stamp out forest and land fire (karhutla). 

"When we (BPBD) found him, he was in an unconscious condition, because he did not wear protection, so he inhaled a lot of smoke," he said when confirmed in Rantau, Tuesday. 

The farmer was found unconscious during the karhutla incident at the bird's eye chili plantation in Hiyung village, Monday (August 28) around 14:00 Wita (Central Indonesia Time Zone). Previously, he struggled to put out fires to save the plant on his land. 

When Tapin BPBD arrived at the location, the farmer was immediately evacuated to the Indonesian Red Cross's (PMI's) ambulance.

"The smoke causes shortness of breath," he said.

PMI Tapin staff Zainal witnessed on the 20 kilometers trip to Datu Sanggul Harapan Sehat Hospital that the farmer suffered shortness of breath causing nausea. 

"He has been treated for about 25 minutes in the hospital," he said. 

While being treaterd, said Zainal, the farmer asked permission to go to the bathroom, then fell, afte which he was declared dead. 

"Doctor suspect he died of a heart attack," he said.
