One of the Dayak longhouses in South Kalimantan the customary house of Malaris in Loklahung Village, Loksado Sub-district, South Hulu Sungai Regency, South Kalimantan, is now preserved as Meratus Geopark site.

The building size is very large 50x45 meters, made of wood, with walls of woven bamboo.

About 20 years ago, the government built the building to replace the old one, said Wardiansyan (70), one of residents around the longhouse, Sunday.

It has rooms for families to live in harmony, all get along together, work together in meeting their needs here.

The life of Meratus Dayak tribe is thick with kinship, unity under one roof of building, which might has lasted for hundreds of years, is reflecting in real picture of the longhouse.

But, modern era entered the region and culture, making condition changed. The Malaris customary house is then no longer inhabited.
 
However, the thickness of culture and belief of their ancestors are still maintained, and the customary house remain their most important part that cannot be separated from their identity in life.
 
Here they still perform various rituals, from thankgiving to traditional medicine.
 
The Meratus Geopark Management Agency assures that Malaris Longhouse continues to be preserved, because it is included in 54 Indonesian National Meratus Geopark sites within the area of 3,342 square kilometers that are proposed to be recognized by UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp).
 
The Meratus Geopark Management Agency's expert Nur Arif on Sunday said Malaris site is a priority, because it is the largest in the geopark.

The uniqeness of culture and life of Meratus Dayak people in the customary house, he said, is a special attraction for tourism sector.
 
Geopark sites, he said, cannot be separated from the development of tourism sector, so they have impact on the benefits of the surrounding community.
