A husband and a wife, Le (60) and Et (70), rubber farmers, were attacked by a wild bear in Kinarum Village, Upau Sub-district, Tabalong Regency, South Kalimantan.
"The victims were attacked by a wild bear while tapping rubber in a plantation around Kinarum Village and suffered three wounds on the leg," said Chief Police of Tabalong AKBP Anib Bastian here on Monday (April 3, 2023).
The victims were immediately taken to Muara Uya Community Health Center to get medical treatment.
Anib appealed to the people living around the forest area to pay attention to their residential and plantation environment.
He reminded that the increasing number of human activities in the forest causes disruption of balance of the ecosystem which could trigger attacks by wild animals on human.
The Head of Tabalong Forest Management Unit (KPH) Heryadi acknowledged that there are bears in the production forest area around the Kinarum Village.
"Previously, we received a report that there were bears in the forest, but we did not know the exact number," he said.
Heryadi considered wild bear attack on farmers, because they felt disturbed by human activities in their habitat.
To follow up the incident, the KPH Tabalong forest security team will conduct search for bears in the vicinity of the incident.
