Amuntai, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Head of North Hulu Sungai Health Agency drg Isnur Hatta said until now this area has not been free of pasung (shackle or physical restraint) although it now focus on the treatment of people with mental illness.

According to Isnur, based on observation to all community health centers (puskesmas) and reports from health officials in the area, there are still many people with severe mental disorders shackled (dipasung) by relatives.

To overcome, he said, the agency forms community of mental disorders service. It is in order patients can be treated with basic services at puskesmas level.

"Because it involves a sense of humanity, handling people with mental disorders will be given priority, especially our area already have a psychiatric specialist," he said in Amuntai Thursday.

According to him, the treatment of mental patients often disconnected, because of lack of care and support from patients' families.

In fact, said Isnur, the administration of drugs to patients with mental illness should not be interrupted because the patient will suffer a relapse.

"Later we'll be socializing into community that people with mental disorders now able to be served in the puskesmas," he said.

Through the community of mental disorder service, added Isnur, health workers in puskesmas will be trained by a psychiatric specialist on duty at the Pambalah Batung Amuntai Hospital.

Puskesmas officers, he added, given the knowledge and skills of basic service to patients with mental disorders. So they need not to be referred to Pambalah Batung Hospital or Sambang Lihum Psychiatric Hospital.

"It should be the role of family to help monitor the patient during treatment so that one day he will be recovered," he said.
