Head of the Banjarmasin Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Fahruraji acknowledged that river water in the city is rising, but still at a safe level.
The rising in river water in Banjarmasin, he said, was due to sea high tides entering the rivers since May 18 and is predicted to last until May 24, 2022.
"Sea water high tide was observed between 2.3 to 2.5 meters went into the Barito River, causing tributaries to overflow," he said.
Even though the tidal river rises to cause tidal flooding, especially in riverside residential areas, the level is still safe.
"From our observations this afternoon, the water level that inundated the South Banjarmasin, West Banjarmasin, Central Banjarmasin, and North Banjarmasin areas was around 5-20 cm," said Fahruraji.
The puddle water will recede quickly if the river water recedes or the tide runs out, so there is no need to worry too much about a major flood.
"It's still a safe limit, but we should stay vigilant and be prepared. Put electronic appliances on high places and be aware of the threat of reptiles (snakes, monitor lizards)," he said.
Because, he said, the threat during the tidal flood included reptiles that could enter people's homes.
"So be aware of this too, especially venomous snakes, if there is one immediately call for help to the BPBD," he said.
He also said, this is a routine cycle that is always repeated with fluctuating high tides.
"We will continue to monitor developments, as well as prepare aid equipment, because we have to be alert for something unwanted to happen," said Fahruraji.
